Quick Hits

Fox News analyst Liz Trotta joked over the weekend about assassinating Barack Obama.

** REZKO VERDICT LIKELY MID-WEEK. The corruption trial of Chicago developer Tony Rezko seems likely to come to its conclusion this week with a jury verdict. Rezko was a patron and financial supporter of an up-and-coming Chicago pol with the unlikely name of Barack Obama. What’s striking is how little Obama has figured in the trial. He’s barely been mentioned.

**  INDY 4 A HUGE HIT AROUND THE WORLD. Fulfilling one of the easiest NWN forecasts ever made, Indiana Jones returned for a fourth picture following a 19-year hiatus in the ever so elegantly named Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. And achieved one of the biggest openings in movie history. Between its Thursday opening and last night, Indy 4 grossed took in $311 million in global box office. In domestic box office, the picture took in $151 million.

To put that in perspective, in only five days, Indy 4 achieved a bigger domestic box office than such recent summer movie smash hits as Terminator 3 (sorry, Governor), Ocean’s Twelve, and Ocean’s Thirteen did in their entire theatrical runs.

** WHERE THEY ARE TODAY.

Barack Obama is in Las Vegas, Nevada. Following his Memorial Day visit to New Mexico and pror to his Wednesday visit to Colorado. The Mountain West is in play for the general election. Colorado, New Mexico, and Nevada together equal Ohio in electoral votes.

John McCain is in Denver, Colorado and Phoenix, Arizona. Denver to try to contest the Mountain West, a new suite of swing states, with Obama. Phoenix for a fundraiser with President Bush.

Hillary Clinton is in Montana. Clinton has tried to sneak up on Obama there, but trails now, 52% to 35%.

Bill Clinton is in Puerto Rico.

** MY LATEST PODCAST. The road ahead.

** THE OTHER BIG PROBLEM WITH HILLARY’S NOTORIOUS REMARKS. I explain the OTHER big problem with Hillary Clinton’s notorious Friday afternoon remarks, on my other blog. (Not the RFK assassination reference, but her false claim that Bill Clinton’s 1992 nomination was in any doubt in June. As you’ll see, the Clinton high command knew in May that the fight was effectively over.)

** SCHWARZENEGGER WEBCAST THIS MORNING. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger joins U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein and Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons at Lake Tahoe to receive the California-Nevada Tahoe Basin Fire Commission report. Schwarzenegger will outline specific steps to be taken in advance of the fire-prone Sierra Nevada region’s fire season. The event will be webcast live this morning at 10:30 AM from www.gov.ca.gov.

** 24/7 LIVE TV NEWS FEED FROM RUSSIA TODAY. Russia has re-emerged as one of the world’s great powers. Click here for a live TV news feed on your computer, bringing you English-language, jargon-free, fast-paced coverage of global and Russian news from the new Russia Today channel. You probably already know about CNN International, BBC World, and Al Jazeera. Russia Today, which also features culture, entertainment, and sports, is based in Moscow and is owned and operated by the TV Novosti division of Russia’s state news agency, RIA Novosti.

While it’s quite foolish to expect to see, say, criticism of Vladimir Putin on Russia Today, which I know as a former DemRussia advisor, the channel is very interesting nonetheless. The NWN live link to RT does not constitute an endorsement of the channel’s views. It’s presented as an otherwise unavailable new media window.

** TRACK GLOBAL AND U.S. ENERGY PRICES IN NEAR REAL TIME VIA BLOOMBERG ENERGY MARKET WATCH. Crude oil is trading in the $130 to $132 per barrel range.

So, I stick by my comments of Saturday evening that she’s a very sick person. Care for the uncensored version of my comments???

  2. Jack Aubrey says:

Liz Trotta is evil. Fox “news” is a continuing outrage.

  3. Jonas Blane says:

    That is crazy stuff.

  4. Ann says:

    No lol about that. :(

  5. Bill Bradley says:

    Indeed.

  6. Bill Bradley says:

That’s one way of putting it.

    Fox should obviously fire her.

How about the euphemistic “uncensored” version? :)

  9. Sacramento Solon says:

I think you have that one. I’m in total agreement with your comments about what Fox should do. But, they won’t…

  10. Ann says:

    They should.

  11. Tommy Boy says:

Nice work on the piece for that other blog. Nice to see the Grey Lady riding your journalistic coattails.

  12. Sacramento Solon says:

    Tommy Boy,

Thanks for posting that. Not only are they riding is journalistic coattails, they even be calling his name. Always know WE would make him a star…yes, I did! :-)

  13. Chris M says:

The pros and cons of Jim Webb as VP are spelled out in a couple of blogs today.

The first argues that he became a Democrat “the day before yesterday,” he’s sexist, he subscribes to the stabbed-in-the-back theory about Vietnam and is a lousy campaigner to boot:
    http://matthewyglesias.theatlantic.com/archives/2008/05/ixnay_on_the_ebbway.php

The second is a partial rebuttal that suggests his views on women are evolving and that he’s in the right on the military and security issues the nation is facing now (while leaving his other positive attributes regarding economic and cultural issues for another piece):

  14. Hap Hazard says:

Very well done glimpse into the first Clinton campaign in 92 over on huffpo. I had forgotten Brown’s great dig about Bill’s golfing. No wonder Hillary was so snitty about it, essentially coming from a clergyman, at least by comparison to Bill..

  15. Len says:

    The NY Times doesn’t lead.

  16. Hap Hazard says:

Interesting Webb articles, but I believe that, although Webb is attractive, it will almost be an admission that he is sorely lacking in military and national security credentials. I think he should pick a woman if possible, like the Governor of Kansas. That helps him with women, which he obviously needs(and it might also take some focus off Michelle). Otherwise, he needs to balance his lack of experience with someone who has years of government experience.

I have been in the position of attending two Academies. I was treated like every one else. Yes, one of my fellow recruits did stuff my retired PT shirt with paper to emphasis the fact that I was the only graduating female. I considered that an honor and not a sexist statement.
The work place was occasionally different. There were times when I was supervised by a dinosaur, who was unable to reason and accept my presence…BUT…I have found that true leadership comes from making mistakes
,admitting them and changing how you treat others around you.
    Chris M,
I did click on your referenced blog and my decision still remains in support of Webb.

  18. Ann says:

    Where’s Schwarzeneger?

  19. Ann says:

    There’s Schwarzeneger. lol

  20. Paul Burton says:

To appeal to women and have someone with a military background, Obama should choose Janet Karpinski as a running mate. She was the U.S. Army Reserve Brigadier General scapegoated for the torture scandal at Abu Ghraib. She’s spoken out against the privatization of torture and war. What has the governor of Kansas ever done?

Webb’s service as a republican warmonger doesn’t disqualify him from the democratic ticket, since both parties of the incumbent duopoly are for endless war and wasteful military spending.

  21. Chris M says:

The Montana poll is interesting. A secondary reason I decided to support Obama was to shake up the red/blue electoral map. Clinton vs. McCain would have made the election all about Ohio. Obama’s candidacy puts PA and MI in play for the Reeps but also puts VA, CO, MT, NV and NM in play for the Dems. The Obama-McCain will be a true national election.

  22. Bill Bradley says:

That’s right. It gets the politics out of a rut, in more ways than one.

  23. Bill Bradley says:

    Sacheen Littlefeather not being available?

  26. Brasky says:

“he is sorely lacking in military and national security credentials”

Didn’t this guy run the Navy during the Cold War? The Navy with all the nuclear missiles and subs? The one with the carriers and cruise missiles used to respond to the likes of Libya, et al?

Having a guy in the White House who understands how to run both a squad of Marines and a fleet of ships seems like pretty good credentials to me.

  27. Bill Bradley says:

Webb was much better than Kathleen Sibelius when he gave the Democratic rebuttal to the State of the Union. He also four years as assistant secretary of defense and secretary of the Navy.

    >Hap Hazard:

  34. Chris M says:

Bill, sorry if on occasion I steer people away from the site :-) !

    The Webb decision is fascinating.

Would his selection alienate a significant portion of Clinton’s base? Does his military background cover a hole for Obama or amplify Obama’s lack of personal military experience? Could Webb really sway enough Scots-Irish* to put PA or OH in the Dem column? Does the VP selection even matter much for electoral purposes and should the prez nominees choose VPs with governance in mind first and foremost?

OTOH, would a Sebelius** selection be seen as blatant play for the women’s vote? Is she ready on Day 1?

    * I predict Scots-Irish will the Word of the Year for 2008.
** I still have to spell-check that, which says something about her name recognition. But that will be the last time. S-e-b-i-l-i-u-s.

I think that not having a veteran on the ticket is a disaster against McCain. If it had been my dream candidate, Meat Romney, it wouldn’t be an issue.

I want a gun-packing, anti-Iraq war VP candidate with some fruit salad on his chest. Plus, the guy has served in the White House.

  37. Brasky says:

“Fox News analyst Liz Trotta joked over the weekend about assassinating Barack Obama.”

I’m sure if Obama joked about Trotta being assassinated, they’d let it slide.
