When I reported yesterday that state Controller Steve Westly would launch his TV advertising drive today in major media markets, the California gubernatorial campaign of rival Democratic Treasurer Phil Angelides would not say when it might begin its own advertising campaign. Now it has just announced that it is starting up, too, and will preview a TV spot at 11:30 AM this morning.

It’s going to be hard to top Arnold in terms of helicopter imagery. One of his big movie moments occurred in a helicopter, when in True Lies he directed a Marine Harrier jet attack on a convoy of terrorists transporting nuclear weapons.
He knows how to look in command in a helo.

I am not so sure ….today the local Sacto radio news have been joking about “how good he is getting at giving tours” very quickly people will see again that he is staging an event with these “tours” and these helo events will be chronicled along with the “tearing up of the good street “…the” red ink” and “cartaxula”…
Actually, Arnold has not done all that much of the helicopter tour stuff. People always yack about things. It’s certainly not overdone yet. Besides, kiddo, you suggested it.

Thank you Gail…I am sure I would agree with you. I am waiting for a Westly commercial her in Sacramento…to no avail…I am going to go workout..I think Westly’s campaign should tell us when and where they are airing…I have a very busy week …I could miss them all…
Barbara, since Westly’s TV ads, as I reported yesterday, are going to be running CONSTANTLY THROUGH THE PRIMARY ELECTION, it is unlikely that you will miss them all.
The thing to do for a good public policy report is ignore all the media buys and concentrate on the positions and policies of the candidates.
None of them – Arnold, Angelides or Westley – are taking positions on key issues: how to finance State government and fund education, how to deal with the explosive growth of California prisons by 700% in 20 years, how to deal with the death penalty, and how to move to universal health care.

Mike’s campaign is a message campaign: that we can’t fund any programs unless we fix Prop 13 so that corporations pay taxes at the current value of property they own or lease. That the death penalty is biased, hugely expensive, doesn’t deter and not imposed in any modern country or 21 states. That the 3-strikes sentences of nonviolent prisoners — the longest in the nation — should be commuted for those who can show they are rehabilitated and able and willing to work.
With the other candidates, it is almost impossible to find out what their positions are, let alone how they intend to pay for their proposals. Talking about the horse race, the money race and the media race is destructive of our democracy, where we used to engage on issues and policy.
Mr. Bradley, this is like “opening day at the ballpark”!…I want to see the first pitch! I am so frustrated I am off to workout now…maybe I will see one at the club on my treadmill! anyway what do they mean “Sacto market” do I have to watch network tv?I only watch 24 and Medium on network TV …

I know this ad …but its just not the same thing as it just popping up in a middle of a program om your TV …Geesh.. you guys have no romance in your souls!
I saw it at 6:30ish while treadmilling! I was running so fast and got so excited I almost fell off! I also had a bit of a tussle over the televisions with a woman that wanted to turn one them to some cooking show…don’t ask me why overweight women always want to watch those cooking shows while they are on the treadmill but they do…but I stood my ground as the rule is you can’t change the channel if someone is already started watching… I positioned myself on the middle treadmill so all three networks were within my vision and there came Westly at the end of the local news!…The local news also showed Arnold intently listening to the President with the other Govs in DC and Jackie Spier holding hearings about prison waste and talking about how much the Guv has screwed up the prisons and they spent endless minutes discussing the rain..it is raining all over California!…
