Quelling A Rebellion

Pro-Arnold forces in the California Republican Party took a few more big steps toward tamping down the rebellion on the right this afternoon at the party’s state convention in San Jose. First, state Senator Tom McClintock, the party’s conservative favorite, delivered a very well-received luncheon address in which he extolled the virtues of his “running mate,” Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. McClintock, who ran a respectably distant third in the 2003 recall election, is running for lieutenant governor.

Then conservative leaders found most of their resolutions criticizing Arnold’s policy positions shot down in the party resolutions committee. The rightists say they had an agreement for resolutions opposing Arnold’s infrastructure bond, budget policies, and minimum wage hike to move to the convention floor tomorrow with only a majority vote required for passage. Instead, the committee sent the resolutions to the floor with a negative recommendation, now requiring a two-thirds vote for passage. Only the rightists’ resolution urging the former action superstar to appoint more Republicans to judgeships moved forward to the floor needing only a majority vote.

“This was a fork in the road,” says ex-state Republican chairman Mike Schroeder as he and other angry conservative leaders expressed their displeasure and lack of support for Schwarzenegger. “He could have allowed a real debate here. He didn’t.”

Looking on with amusement was Democratic strategist Garry South, who quipped, “It seems every even numbered year the Republican Party turns into the Donner Party.”

Chairman Duf Sundheim sees the agreement differently, saying what he agreed to was only an open discussion and that he can’t control what the committee does. The resolutions chairman, he says, told him Wednesday there were not the votes to move the resolutions forward with a positive or neutral recommendation. “I agreed to have debate, it’s in the best interest of the party. That is what I agreed to.”

Well I do not know why Mr. South is watching the Republicans right now! Phil Angeliedes is already picking out the art work for his office when he is governor…I took off early this morning for a trip along the Delta River Valley… Locke was the first stop…I entered a gallery and fell in love with a painting called “4 Mexicans Pear Harvest Jubilee.” It was too expensive for me but I purchased a print. The artist Ning Hou had opened the gallery early especially for me and my girlfriend. Then he told us that Phil Angelides was at the gallery a few weeks ago and saw the exact painting that I fell in love with! Ning Hou claims that Angelides said “this is the painting that I want in my office when I am governor!” So I said oh well that is wonderful, I mean about the painting being in the governor’s office … then Hou said well “everyone is voting for him”…so I said “everyone”? …he repeated “yes, everyone”…so I am just hoping he means everyone in Locke which is approx 85 people…

  2. Adam says:

Well, I guess Garry South has nothing better to do. It’s not like his candidate is barnstorming the state, making himself known and getting into good confabs with the citzenry.

  3. Barbara says:

Well this kind of put a damper on my day…thank goodness there was a sign on the road that said “wine tasting party” after we left Locke…I think both Dems candidates are doing things …the press is just not picking up ..You must start getting Westly google alerts … he has called for a debate with Phil A…and of course check in and read Mr Bradley at least 3 times a day or more!…

  4. gail says:

gotta luv the ‘donner party’ quote.
    so true.
    and so it goes

  5. Barbara says:

Did you know that you cannot ride a horse along the Delta at all? As far as I am concerned none of the “Infrastructure Packages” are addressing my needs…

  6. Adam says:

ooh, debates, it’s like some kind of dream.

that must be what Westly is up to all these days he’s not out there campaigning,
and on the days when he’s not attracting less than 70 citizens of a major city to a free lunch in a nice restaurant. Yes, he’s studying for those potential debates.

    let’s see, june 6th…
maybe Steve who? and Phil what’s-his-name? can get some google alerts.

  7. Barbara says:

Adam, Westly is campaigning in the Monterrey and Bakersfield. If you got get your Westly google alerts then you would know that …you are providing “disinformation on Westly”.. and you better watch yourself or Mr. South will come an google you!

  8. garry south says:

Go ahead and buy that painting, Barbara. Angelides won’t get a chance to re-decorate the governor’s office!

  9. Barbara says:

Well I would But Mr. South but it is $32,000 and I have to stable a horse on a state worker salary (a real one not like Susie the saluter’s salary) Maybe you would consider buying it for me.? This artist also told me he teaches Di Fi ! You would be supporting an artist that is a great friend to Dems and making a staunch Westly supporter a very happy woman…..

  10. Barbara says:

And if you do that …buy me the painting ..then when Westly is governor I could loan it to him and he can hang it in the his office! Isn’t that a great idea Mr. South? …That’s me! just full of ideas!

  11. Barbara says:

Mr Bradley, do you think Mr. South has gone… how did you explain it to us a few posting back…oh yeah!…”gone dark” again?

  12. Bill Bradley says:

It could have something to do with being on an airplane on Saturday night …

  13. Adam says:

Barbara, the Moneterey (which already happened) and Bakersrfield stops are two weeks apart. Grueling schedule he’s on. At this pace, he’ll no doubt visit every county by July. Oh wait.

  14. Barbara says:

That explains his silence…I knew there was a good reason as to why our conversation was cut off…

  15. Barbara says:

Adam, please see: Mr South’s remark above. As you can see, Mr South is not going to break my heart…He will see to it that Westly wins the primary and then the general. He is a MAN with a plan …now I have to go and figure out where to hang my painting…Toodles…

  16. Roberta says:

“THE DONNER PARTY,” is classic Garry South! I would almost want Westly to win, just to see Garry and Arniebaby duke it out!
The reeps sure have very strange bedfellows…is there anything of substance that Schwarzeneggar and McClintock agree on? How about Susan Kennedy for starters? Just her name must kill him!

  17. Adam says:

Yes, Garry South represents all that’s good and noble in politics, especially pay-to-play fundraising and negative advertising–his two strongest legacies with Gray Davis.

Heck, voter disgust and record low-turnout (something he helped accomplish in 2002, inspiring the wonderful recall of 2003) are worth the trade-off for a few colorful quips.

Looks like he’s intent on burying another millioniare, only this time it’s his own candidate.

  18. Bill Bradley says:

There’s a lot you don’t know about the 2002 campaign.

As for the 2006 campaign. Watch this space.

  19. Adam says:

Bill, I know South is valuable to commentators like yourself, especially because he’s always ready with a funny quip, but don’t make the mistake of assuming all of you ‘insiders’ are the only ones who know what ‘really’ happened in 2002. I followed things rather closely, and later even read through the book of Berkeley’s IGS post-election forums. I know enough about the 2002 campaign to know most of what occurred is exactly what sickens and depresses most voters. But if you have some insider-baseball-never-been-explained- before insights on the record low turn-out and the recall that followed, please do share.

  20. Bill Bradley says:

Adam, I knew Garry South before he was “Garry South.” I’ve already reported on what happened in the 2002 race and how the electorate became soured.

Also with regard to the 2006 campaign. Watch this space.

  21. Adam says:

Yes, and I’ve been reading your pieces for years, so I guess I do know something about what happened in 2002! :-)

The one thing that has always dismayed me, especially about those post-election forums, is how unwilling anyone is to accept real blame for trivializing campaigns, for turning them into nasty, money-grubbing, superficial spectacles. It’s always a matter of tactics or bad luck or not enough money’; it’s never that the consultants and pollsters have helped turn the democratic process into a mockery.

And of course I’ll watch this space.

  22. Bill Bradley says:

Well, since you’re been reading me then you already know that Governor Gray Davis rejected the unanimous advice of his four principal strategists — Garry South, David Doak, Tom O’Donnell, and Paul Maslin — that he have a much more positive cast to his advertising.

  23. Adam says:

What about the negative attacks on Riordan during the GOP primary? While tactically successful, didn’t that contribute to Davis’ low public approval ratings? Were those 4 against that negative campaign? I don’t think so.

Well before that, didn’t Garry South say in the very first week after Davis was elected in ’98, that they’d have to raise 50 million, in order to scare off any more multi-millionaire candidates? Of course they raised a lot more than that and in doing so created the strong perception of pay-to-play as Davis’ modus operandi.

Such things make sense in terms of political tactics, but why doesn’t anyone see how they contribute to the cynicism and disgust that so many voters have towards politicians?

  24. Tommy Boy says:

I think South did say the thing about having to raise money to face millionaires, but was he wrong? Neither Simon or Riordan were poor, shall we say? For that matter, niether was Arnold…come recall time! He’d also just come off beating that airline guy in the 1998 primary.

I wrote before on this blog about rich people running for office. And I’m stickin by it!

Either you don’t have your own money and have to raise tons of it (Davis); or you are rich, don’t fundraise as much and get blasted for being a wealthy self-funder (Simon, Westly); or you have money of your own, but go out and raise more than Davis (and faster) from anyone with a willing and open checkbook (Arnold); or you have money of your own but large amounts of your political cash come from a small group (or even one family/company/interest) (Angelides).

The whole money system needs to be looked at. It’s about to by the Supreme Court, and there are bills all over the place to address the situation. I saw Westly answer a question from some loyal NWN reader on his own site that he supports the Hancock bill which would tackle some of the issues of money and politics. I’m not sure where Arnold and Phil are on it.

Something needs to be done, though. The fact that a billion or more dollars were thrown around in the 2004 elections should tell you where we are at.

  25. Adam says:

Tommy, there’s raising money and then there’s becoming a fund-raising machine without any scruples whatsover. I recall that incident were Davis made a group Berkeley students pony up $100 a piece for the privilege of meeting the man. It got that bad. I heard rumors that even his wife had to slip a couple of twenties under the front door at night in order to come in and have dinner with him.

I have no problem with wealthy, self-financing candidate per se, but what does it say to any bright, hard-working, decent person who has no personal wealth but would like to get into public service? It says: don’t bother, unless, like Gray Davis, you’re willing to sell your soul for cash. Yes, the system is rotten, totally rotten.

Btw, I was the loyal NWW reader who asked Westly about clean money. His staffer said he supports the Hancock bill, but when I asked what he’s actually DOING to support it, I got no answer. It’s easy to say your for something, especially a bill that’s getting watered down. I wish he’d make it an issue, I wish he’d come out strong for campaign finance reform and come with ideas, but I’m a dreamer. Apparently a half-baked idea about making community college free is the ticket to winning the primary.

  26. Bill Bradley says:

What do you want Westly to do on the clean money bill? Use his clout as governor to get it passed? Maybe he should invest his personal fortune in the nurses union’s efforts to qualify an initiative.

  27. Adam says:

Well, what has he done? Has he lobbied state senators to get the Hancock bill passed? Has he come out boldly in support of it, throwing the power of his candidacy behind it and other necessary political reforms? Has he promised to fight for it if elected Guv? Has he given money to the nurses union initiative?

If he truly believes in clean money reform, than yes, he’ll put his clout and some of his money where his mouth is. Is that too much to expect? I don’t think so. Otherwise, don’t say you’re for it.

  28. Bill Bradley says:

These are questions best taken up with the Westly campaign.

  29. Bill Bradley says:

Incidentally, we have wandered very far afield from the topic.

  30. Adam says:

Right. I did take those questions up with them. No response.

    back on topic…
What did you think of Arnold’s appearance on Meet The Press?

  31. gail says:

    adam,
i will take the bait regarding governor arnold and tim russert.
arnold seemed peeved and defensive. not a strong performance. russert was tough on him.
    and so it goes.

  32. Tommy Boy says:

“What do you want Westly to do on the clean money bill? Use his clout as governor to get it passed? Maybe he should invest his personal fortune in the nurses union’s efforts to qualify an initiative.”

If that was aimed at me, I’d love to see whoever wins the race sign the thing! All three of the guys running for Guv put their own money into the special.

I can’t say I’m 100% versed in what it does, but I’ll bone up when I get a chance. It does sound like a good idea.

The person I’d really love to see act on the bill would be Gray Davis. I would love to see him co-chair the campaign to pass the nurses’ proposition!

As for going off topic…I’ll let this part of the thread die.

    Welcome to the Blogosphere, Bill…
