Former Governor Jerry Brown checks in by e-mail with, as usual, some intriguing thoughts, and this time, with a poll. Which shows him near 50 percent in the Democratic primary race for California attorney general, with a more than 30 point lead over his rival, L.A. City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo. Which is where they were a half-year ago. Brown, two-time runner-up for the Democratic presidential nomination, now the mayor of Oakland, reports that he has raised $4.3 million for this particular race, nearly half again as much as Delgadillo’s $3.1 million. Given the frugality of his late mother, former First Lady Bernice Brown, it’s not surprising that he has nearly $4 million in the bank, much more than Delgadillo.

Footsteps…that’s what Jerry hears. If what he tells you is accurate, then Rocky has outraised Jerry for the second reporting period in a row.
Remember, Rocky didn’t begin raising money for the AG race until March 2005, while Jerry started collecting in 2004.
I guess Roger hasn’t read all of the major LA papers today, in which his candidate is shish-kabob’d on the stake of his own incompetence for out-of-control spending practices in the City Attorney’s office. Many of Rocky’s contributions are from the same firms to which he has been pimping contracts (and, according to reports, the record-keeping is very shoddy) so, in effect, he has been filling his own campaign coffers with LA taxpayer money.
Corrupt.
Rocky began his AG fundraising under the guise of a City Attorney re-election campaign, so claims that he’s been outraising Jerry are completely bogus. Bogus — just like Rocky’s announcement of a lawsuit against a video game maker on the very day that his bad news hit the papers. Nice try, Rog.
Yes, those are not good stories. I think I could run Jerry Brown’s primary campaign from my bathroom.
I seriously doubt that, Bill. I mean, that’s just not plausible. Not without WiFi anyways.
As for the fundraising, Mr. “W”; do the math, ace.
The $3.1 million raised by Delgadillo has been in this cycle as candidate for Attorney General, not under any “guise”, and all of it since March of 2005.
Jerry tells Mr. Bradley he has raised $4.3 million total for this race. According to his filed reports, he raised $1.7 million of that amount in 2004, which means he raised $2.6 million in 2005.
Jerry = $2.6 million in 12 months/ Rocky = $3.1 million in 9 months.
BlackBerry, Roger.
He is a funny man. He used to be great. Is his time past?
Why is Delgadilla running as a Democrat instead of a Republican? He was Richard Riordan’s favorite Hispanic.
Rocky Delgadillo was, I recall one of Republican LA Mayor Dick Riordan’s deputy mayors. That is the first time I heard of him.
Is Jerry Brown’s time past? Voters in the Bay Area don’t think so. The answer is, probably not.
The thing that’s always fascinated me about Jerry Brown is that he’s never been an ideologue, and so his mistakes are wholly his own rather than those of the party itself.
Plus, he’s one of the rare politicians who has always struck me as having a real inner life,
as opposed to someone like Reagan who I doubt ever spent more than two minutes at a time in his own head. That reflective, intellectually curious quality doesn’t make for a terribly effective leader, perhaps, but it does make for a very interesting public person.
Jerry Brown is a very interesting man and you’ve made some telling observations about him.
Brown has whipped Presidents in primaries, why would some city attorney think he can beat him?
Great article. I am just sad I dont know how to reply properly, though, since I want to show my appreciation like many other.
